Energy and Environmental Management Systems

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the international standard for an EMS (environmental management system).

An EMS is a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions, while maintaining the organisation’s needs. It is suitable for organisations of all types and sizes, in all sectors and locations.

Implementing an ISO 14001-compliant EMS will help your organisation:

  • Improve its control and management of emissions and waste;
  • Demonstrate compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements;
  • Enhance its energy and operational efficiency, reducing generated waste and saving costs;
  • Safely handle hazardous or potentially polluting materials;
  • Conserve natural resources; and
  • Pursue environmental initiatives that are aligned with business priorities.

Accredited certification to the Standard demonstrates that your organisation’s environmental impact is being continually measured and improved.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard for an EnMS (energy management system).

An EnMS provides organisations with a systematic approach to continually improve its energy performance – including energy efficiency, use and consumption. Like all ISO management system standards, it is suitable for organisations of all types and sizes, in all sectors and locations.

ISO 50001 and ESOS compliance

The government’s ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that have more than 250 staff, or an annual turnover of over £44 million and an annual balance sheet total of more than £38 million.

If your organisation falls into either of those two categories, you are legally obliged to implement certain energy efficiency measures and undertake an ESOS assessment every four years to demonstrate your compliance.

Alternatively, you can implement and maintain an EnMS compliant with and certified to ISO 50001, and notify the Environment Agency that you are compliant with ESOS.
