Could your organisation benefit from implementing policies from different standards?

By Tom Wood and Sarah Brown

Standards are a set of rules and procedures that have been agreed by authoritative organisations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

No matter the size or type of your organisation, standards can be vital to improve its day-to-day running. They can help you strengthen your IT security, implement new management systems and even help control your environmental impact.

Standards can also assist in building confidence with your staff and customers as you are demonstrating the agreed best practice for procedures.

For example, the Change Management Policy found in the ITSM, ITIL & ISO20000 Implementation Toolkit can be used to organise how your employees adapt to a new business procedure or system. An efficient change management policy causes minimal disruption to your service quality meaning both staff and customers have better experiences.

So, why aren’t businesses making the most of standards?

There could be several reasons, such as a lack of awareness of certain standards and regulations. For instance, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2018 found that as little as six months ago, 44% of UK charities were not aware of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Additionally, organisations may not want to invest time and money in implementing full standards where some material will not be relevant to their business.

However, even though a whole standard might not be relevant, there will be beneficial procedures or policies within it, such as an access control policy in the ISO 27001 standard.
